Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) commemorates the effective end of slavery in the United States. under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln.
Veritas announced in late 2021 that Juneteenth would be added as a U.S. Public Holiday, which will be observed on Monday, June 19, this year. U.S. employees are encouraged to use the holiday to observe, learn, reflect, and celebrate the day’s significance.
“Juneteenth has never been a celebration of victory or an acceptance of the way things are. It’s a celebration of progress. It’s an affirmation that despite the most painful parts of our history, change is possible—and there is still so much work to do.” —Barack Obama
Here is how the Veritas BLEVE family celebrates Juneteenth.
Each year I enjoy celebrating Juneteenth. It is a time to honor the past while celebrating the progress that has been made and anticipating the future progress that we continue to strive for. This year in my hometown, I will be participating in the 42nd Annual Festival in the Streets of Downtown San Jose which will feature good food, lots of fun and have the Florida A&M University Marching 100 Band as the featured guest!
I have used Juneteenth as an opportunity to gather friends and family to celebrate a momentous moment in time and reflect on all the accomplishments that African Americans have been able to achieve since the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation and the freeing of the last slaves in 1865.
Juneteenth will always be ingrained in my mind as a time to remember the sacrifices and drive of others whose efforts ended the mistreatment of a specific race group. Every year I come together with family and friends to celebrate the strides we have made as a community as we continue to progress forward for the future.
I participate in a festival that celebrates and commemorates Juneteenth and its significance of our heritage. Seeing people laughing, enjoying cultural dishes and coming together strengthens the very importance of what Juneteenth means and how it has assisted in shaping the present.
We plan to mark Juneteenth this year by attending the Annual Oakland and Berkeley Juneteenth Festival. Afterward, we will have a casual backyard barbeque with family and friends. Our gathering is a way to honor this significant moment in American history and its growing significance in our nation's consciousness.
