Considerations for Veritas Data Deduplication server if it is configured without WORM storage

If Veritas Data Deduplication without WORM is configured on the appliance, the Veritas Data Deduplication server is automatically unconfigured when you upgrade to 8.3 and the following message is displayed:

Veritas Data Deduplication has been unconfigured
during the upgrade. Use the dedupe config command to reconfigure
Veritas Data Deduplication, and then proceed to add the additional IPs, if
any. You can use the dedupe> config <filesystem list> <IP>
<username> <catfs_name> <vdd_version> command to reconfigure
Veritas Data Deduplication.

You must reconfigure the Veritas Data Deduplication server after the upgrade is complete. In the earlier versions, the Veritas Data Deduplication without WORM service runs on a host. In version 8.3, this service is reconfigured to run as a container.

The time taken for reconfiguring deduplication depends on the volume of data present in the deduplication pool. For example, if you have a legacy system where there is a single deduplication file system which can grow up to 1 PB, it may take approximately three hours to reconfigure the deduplication pool. Contact Veritas Support if the reconfiguration takes longer than the estimated time. Make sure that you set aside sufficient time to reconfigure the Veritas Data Deduplication server after the upgrade is complete.

Ensure that you make a note of the following configuration details before you upgrade. These details are required when you reconfigure the service. You can use the dedupe show command to view the configuration details of the configured Veritas Data Deduplication server.

  • The virtual IP that you used to configure the Veritas Data Deduplication server.

  • The credentials to access the Veritas Data Deduplication server.

  • The file systems that you used for storing the deduplicated data and the catalog file system that you used for storing the metadata.
