Problem
How to drop the existing Backup Exec Database and reload from backup
Solution
Backup Exec runs a backup of it's database "BEDB" at 4:00 AM everyday as a part of its maintenance routine.
NOTE: The maintenance time can be changed from Backup Exec Global Icon -> Configuration and Settings -> Backup Exec settings-> Database Maintenance and Security.
It stores the backup at Backup Exec Data Folder (BE Install Path\Data). Dropping the existing database and reloading from backup may be necessary if the Backup Exec Database (BEDB) has been corrupted and this will revert the database to before maintanance state.
- Open BEUtility.exe from X:\Program Files\Symantec or Veritas\Backup Exec (X: is the drive where Backup Exec binaries are installed. By default, it would be C:)
- In the Veritas Backup Exec dialog box, select Yes to continue
- On the left pane, Expand Known Computers and then All Backup Exec servers
- On the right pane, Right-click your media server and select Recover Database from the pop-up menu.
- In the Recover Database dialog box, select the database instance desired to be reloaded. Next, select Drop existing database and reload from backup and click OK
- In the pop-up window, select Yes to continue with the drop and reload.
- The Operations Progress dialog box will appear indicating the progress of re-loading the database.
- Once completed, click Close and exit BEUtility.
- Open the Backup Exec Console and confirm all information and settings have been cleared.
NOTE : The changes made to the database after the maintanance would be lost. Hence, it is advisable to backup the current
bedb_dat.mdf and
bedb_log.ldf before performing the above step.
