How to check an NFS share can be used as a backup-to-disk storage device

Product(s): Backup Exec

Problem

Backup Exec supports using NFS shares as backup-to-disk storage devices (B2D) via UNC path such as \\server-name\folder-name

This document describes how to check an NFS share can be used as a B2D.

Error Message

N/A

Cause

Currently, there are no certified NFS devices. Customers can verify that an NFS device or NFS share can be used as a B2D.

Solution

1. Logon into Backup Exec server using Backup Exec Service Account (BESA).

2. Open a Command Prompt.

3. Go to Backup Exec installed folder:

C:\...> cd C:\Program Files\Veritas\Backup Exec

by default

4. Execute the following command:

C:\...> b2dtest -d -w \\server\folder

-d: (default) suppress inputting comments about the share or device.

-w: (working folder) Specify the UNC path of the NFS share which needs to be checked.

Limitations:

  • Simplified Disaster Recovery (SDR) does not support using NFS shares when recovering a Backup Exec server. Remote servers can be restored using active Backup Exec servers and NFS shares.

  • Backing up from NFS shares is not supported.

Example output of b2dtest command:

C:\Program Files\Veritas\Backup Exec>b2dtest -d -w \\storage1\nfs\export1

06/27/23 16:35:38       The appliance does not support reparse points.  Some
06/27/23 16:35:38       of the advanced B2D technologies such as GRT may not
06/27/23 16:35:38       function.
06/27/23 16:35:38
06/27/23 16:35:38       For GRT to function correctly, either the B2D path
06/27/23 16:35:38       or the temporary path for GRT operations must be an
06/27/23 16:35:38       NTFS partition that supports reparse points.  If this
06/27/23 16:35:38       is not the case, GRT operations will fail.
