Hotfix for Security Advisory Impacting NetBackup Servers

Summary

Veritas has addressed vulnerabilities affecting NetBackup Primary and Media servers.

Issues

Issue #1: XML External Entity Injection

The NetBackup Primary server is vulnerable to an XML External Entity (XXE) injection attack through the nbars process.

  • Severity: Medium
  • CVSS v3.1 Base Score: 5.4 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:L)
  • Impacted Components: Primary and Media servers
  • Affected Versions: 10.0.0.1 and earlier
  • Recommended Action:
    • NetBackup Primary and Media Servers: Upgrade to 8.3.0.2 or 9.0.0.1, or 9.1.0.1 or 10.0.0.1 and apply appropriate Hotfix.
    • NetBackup Clients: Not impacted. No action needed.
    • NetBackup Appliance: Upgrade to any Maintenance Release (MR) of 3.3.0.2 or 4.0.0.1, or 4.1.0.1 or 5.0.0.1 MR1 and apply appropriate Hotfix.
    • Flex Appliance: Please apply the NetBackup Hotfix corresponding to the NetBackup Container version on Flex appliances.
    • Flex Scale: Please contact Veritas Technical Support and reference Knowledge Article ID 100053006 to obtain a fix.

Issue #2: Denial of Service

The NetBackup Primary server nbars process can be crashed resulting in a denial of service attack. (Note – watchdog service will automatically restart the process.)

  • Impacted Components: Primary and Media servers
  • Affected Versions: 10.0.0.1 and earlier
  • Recommended action:
    • NetBackup Primary and Media Servers: upgrade to 8.3.0.2 or 9.0.0.1, or 9.1.0.1 or 10.0.0.1 and apply appropriate Hotfix.
    • NetBackup Clients: Not impacted. No action needed.
    • NetBackup Appliance: Upgrade to any Maintenance Release (MR) of 3.3.0.2 or 4.0.0.1, or 4.1.0.1 or 5.0.0.1 MR1 and apply appropriate Hotfix.

Notes

This Security Advisory, VTS22-013, also addresses the issues identified in VTS22-004 and VTS22-011, which were released earlier. If you have not already applied VTS22-004 or VTS22-011, it is not necessary to apply them first. If you have already applied either VTS22-004 or VTS22-011 you can safely apply VTS22-013 on top of them.
