If the AIX operating system is upgraded to 7.1TL2SP5 or higher patch levels with the DMP native support enabled, the system may fail to boot and the DMP native support may not be successfully enabled after the update [3169854]
If the AIX operating system is upgraded to 7.1TL2SP5 or higher patch levels with the DMP native support enabled, the system may fail to boot. Further, the DMP native support may not be successfully enabled for 7.1TL2SP5 or higher patch levels. The following error can be observed:
$ vxdmpadm settune dmp_native_support=on
VxVM vxdmpadm ERROR V-5-1-16951 boot image size exceeding the system limit, trying to recover
VxVM vxdmpadm ERROR V-5-1-16952 system recovery successful, but DMP support for LVM bootability could not be enabled
VxVM vxdmpadm ERROR V-5-1-15690 Operation failed for one or more volume groups
VxVM vxdmpadm ERROR V-5-1-15686 The following VG(s) could not be migrated as could not enable DMP support for LVM bootability - rootvg
The problem occurs because AIX imposes a limit on the size of boot image. If the DMP native support is enabled, the size of boot image may exceed the allowable limit and hence system fails to boot.
Workaround: It is not recommended to upgrade the operating system to 7.1TL2SP5 or higher patch levels with the DMP native support enabled. There will be a patch published once the issue is resolved.
