Pointing the database and log paths to the SFW volumes

For each Exchange 2010 database, set the database and log files paths to point to the appropriate SFW volume.

You can use either the Exchange Management Console or the Exchange Management Shell cmdlets to specify log and database locations. You can specify locations when creating new databases or change the locations for existing databases.

Note:

You cannot use the Exchange Management Console to change the log file location for remote Mailbox servers.

Note:

When Exchange Server 2010 is installed, a database is created on the boot drive by default. The boot drive cannot be snapshotted. If you want to implement a snapshot solution for that database, you must move it to new volumes not on the boot drive.

The following procedure can be used to change paths for existing databases to point to the SFW volumes you created for them.

To use the Exchange Management Console to change file paths for an existing database

  1. On the server on which the database is located, launch Exchange Management Console from the Apps menu on the Start screen.
  2. In the console tree, navigate to Organization Configuration > Mailbox.
  3. In the result pane, on the Database Management tab, select the database you want to configure.
  4. In the work pane, click Move Database Path.
  5. In the Move Database Path wizard, edit the Database file path field to specify the SFW volume location for the database. Edit the Log folder path field to specify the SFW volume location for the log files.
  6. Click Move.
  7. View the status of the move operation. The wizard moves the database file path and the log folder path to the new location. Click Back if you want to make configuration changes.
  8. On the Completion panel, confirm whether the path was changed successfully. A status of Completed indicates that the wizard completed the task successfully. A status of Failed indicates that the task was not completed. If the task fails, review the summary for an explanation, and then click Back to make any configuration changes. Click Finish to complete the Move Database Path wizard.
