On some appliance models, the RAID Hot Spare Disks (Dedicated or Global) are spun down as part of the energy saving features. These disks are then spun back up (transitioned) periodically to undergo a quick diagnostics check to ensure the viability to maintain the fault tolerance of the RAID Array, if a true disk failure occurs.

While these hard disk drives mainly reside within the appliance base chassis (Internal Storage Enclosure), others will reside in the external expansion storage shelves (External Storage Enclosure) for the associated appliance models.

Error Message

  • UMI Event code: V-475-100-1001
  • Component Type: Disk
  • Component: Enclosure XX Disk XX
  • Status: Unconfigured Bad
  • State: ERROR

XX represents the Enclosure and Disk Slot Number as described in the "Problem" section above.

Cause

An enhancement was made to a hardware monitoring plugin. This change resulted in a condition where some RAID hot spare disks are flagged as having an "Unconfigured Bad" status when the hot spare disk was in the process of going through the diagnostics check. This is a false alert, since the disk is not actually in an "Unconfigured Bad state.

Solution

Short Term: Allow the alert to clear itself, which happens automatically after 5 minutes. No manual intervention necessary.
