Veritas System Recovery Manager / Monitor is unable to monitor remote client, error "connection failed".

Problem

 Veritas System Recovery (VSR) Manager / Monitor is unable to monitor remote client, error "connection failed".

Error Message

Connection failed. 

Solution

Enable DCOM access rights on the machine where VSR Agent is installed
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type dcomcnfg and press <enter>. This will open the Component Services window
4. Expand [Component Services] > [Computers]
5. Right click [My Computer]
6. Click [Properties]
7. In the [COM Security] tab, modify both [Edit Limits] and [Edit Default] under [Access Permissions] and add a user in order to access from VSR Manager / Monitor to VSR Agent. 
8. Check [Local Launch] and [Remote Access] for the user and click [Apply] and [OK].
9. Modify both [Edit Limits] and [Edit Default] under [Launch and Activation Permissions] and add the a user in order to access from VSR Manager / Monitor to VSR Agent.
10. Check [Local Access], [Remote Launch], [Local Activation] and [Remote Activation] for the user and click [Apply] and [OK].

Enable WMI namespace access rights
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type wmimgmt.msc and press <enter>. This will open the WMI management window
4. Right click WMI Control
5. Click on Properties
6. Click the Security tab
7. Click Security at the bottom
8. Click Advanced
9. Click Add
10. Locate the windows user or user group you want to add exclusive rights to and click OK
11. Click the user you added and click Edit
12. Change the Apply to: drop down menu to This namespace and subnamespaces
13. Click box to check Execute Methods, Enable Account, and Remote Enable permissions
14. Click Apply
15. Click OK
16. Close the WMI Management window. Please ensure Windows Management Instrumentation service is running.

Add the user to Administrators group
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type compmgmt.msc and press <enter>. This will open the Computer Management window.
4. Browse [Local Users and Groups] [Groups].
5. Double-click [Administrators].
6. Click [Add].
7. Add the user and click [OK].
8. Close the Computer Management window.

Install a part of VSR components on the machine where VSR Monitor is installed
1. Run Browser.exe or \SSR\SSRx64\Setup.exe (or \SSR\SSR32\Setup.exe) in VSR install media.
2. Check the below items and complete the installation.

Backup and Recovery Service

4. Reboot. 

NOTE: 
If you do not want to install "Backup and Recovery Service" on the machine where VSR Monitor is installed, please refer to article.100044590 as a workaround.

Configure VSR Manager / Monitor

1. Press "Add new computer" button.

2. Type your hostname or IP address, username and password.

NOTE: Regarding username, type .\<username> for workaroup or type <domain name>\<username> for domain.
