Problem

Backup of VMware virtual machine with non ASCII characters (e.g. traditional Chinese characters) in vmdk name fails with error mentioned below
 

Error Message

Final error: 0xe0009585 - Unable to open a disk of the virtual machine.
Final error category: Resource Errors

 

Verify- VMVCB::\\VCName\VCGuestVm\(DC)Windows-vCenter(DC)\vm\OS\中文的XP32bit
Data for VMVCB::\\VCName\VCGuestVm\(DC)Windows-vCenter(DC)\vm\OS\中文的XP32bit\中文的XP32bit\中文的XP32bit.vmdk is corrupt.

Cause

VMware does not recommend using non ASCII characters in the vmdk name or vm name. Refer VMware KB kb.vmware.com/kb/1003866 and Backup Exec Article 100010045 for details.

Solution

Rename the vmdk name using characters supported by VMware.
