WMI backup method

These NetBackup 8.0 features for Hyper-V use the WMI backup method. (These features do not use VSS.)

Block-level incremental backup (BLIB)

BLIB uses Microsoft's resilient change tracking (RCT) to perform faster backup of the virtual machines.

BLIB backups support recovery of the full virtual machine and of individual files.

BLIB also reduces the size of the virtual machine backup image.

Accelerator

Accelerator uses Microsoft's resilient change tracking (RCT) to perform faster backup of virtual machines (full backups and incremental backups).

Accelerator backups support recovery of the full virtual machine and of individual files.

Note:

Accelerator requires the use of block-level incremental backup (BLIB).

Support for new storage types

  • Windows Server Message Block (SMB) 3.0 file shares

    For backup and restore of the virtual machines that are hosted on SMB 3.0 file shares. Hyper-V can use SMB 3.0 files shares as shared storage for virtual machine files.

  • Windows Storage Spaces and Storage Spaces Direct

    For backup and restore of the virtual machines that are hosted on Windows Storage Spaces. Storage Spaces and Storage Spaces Direct are Windows virtual disks that are configured from the available capacity in disk storage pools.

Policy Query Builder option to filter VMs based on VM configuration version

Two new Hyper-V Intelligent Policy filters are available, for automatic selection of virtual machines based on their VM configuration version.

Restore features

The following are enhancements for restoring a VM that was backed up with the WMI method:

  • A new VM GUID is generated by default when you restore a VM to an alternate location. As an option, you can choose to keep the original GUID.

  • A new VM display name can be specified when you restore a VM.

Note:

The GUID and display name enhancements cannot be used when you restore the VM to a staging location.
