This document will explain the expected behavior of media management in regards to Removable Cartridges (RDX) in Backup Exec 2012 after applying Service Pack 4 or later.
After updating the BE 2012 server with Service Pack 4, the process responsible for managing/reclaiming space from expired media will work as follows:
Both expired .BKF and IMG media will be reclaimed when a write operation is attempted on the currently inserted and online disk cartridge. Regardless of the type job that is targeted to the cartridge, GRT or non-GRT, any media that is expired and deletable based on DLM rules will get reclaimed.
Running a FULL backup to 2 RDX cartridges that will rotate daily using a 23 hour overwrite protection retention on the backup job.
Day 1 - Daily Backup runs with 23 hour retention to cartridge A.
Day 2 - Inserted cartridge B, and Daily Backup starts and completes.
Day 3 - Inserting Cartridge A again, the system recognizes that this first cartridge is now back online. The daily backup kicks off. Before the backup begins writing to the cartridge, DLM reclaims the expired media off the cartridge(BKF and IMG files) and then removes the matching catalog information. Now there is room for the daily backup to begin.
Day 4 - The same behavior as day 3 but with Cartridge B.
If the data is needed to be kept on the physical cartridge, then the read only switch on the physical RDX cartridge should be switched to read only.
