This issue may occur if the media server or the remote server are experiencing VSS failures.

Please follow the troubleshooting steps below to resolve the problem:

  1. Check Windows Event Viewer for any VSS related errors like Event ID 8193, Event ID 20, Event ID 13, etc.
  2. Check the Writer status:
    1. Open the command prompt and type vssadmin list writers and make sure all the writers are stable / no errors reported.
    2. In case of writer failures / errors, reboot the server in question and check the writer status again.
      1. If the writers still show failures, contact Microsoft technical support for advanced troubleshooting and repair of the VSS system.
      2. If the writers show stable with no errors, attempt to run the backup job again.
  3. In case of an Agent for Exchange backup, make sure the Exchange Maintenance Schedule does not conflict with the Exchange backup schedule time.

Alternatively, review the following VSS related Microsoft articles which may help in troubleshooting VSS issues: - No VSS writers are listed when you run vssadmin list writers on Windows Server 2008 - Various issues may occur on a Windows Server 2003-based computer that is running the Volume Shadow Copy Service
