Backup job completes with Recovered Status and the Backup Exec job engine system service is not responding.

A file system backup job runs and a byte count is seen in the Job Status column in the Backup and Restore section of the Backup Exec console. Eventually the byte count stops increasing and the Job Status shows the Operation as Completed, however the Status remains as running. Eventually the job will stop and reported "Recovered" and error with "The Backup Exec job engine system service is not responding".

0xe00081d9 - The Backup Exec job engine system service is not responding.



This issue is caused because the large number of users shares on the remote server requires a bigger incoming RPC data size allowance. 

In the environment this was reported against, the number of shares on the remote server exceeded 2,000.



Edit registry on the Backup Exec media server to increase Backup Exec RPC block size setting.


Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.


  1. On the Backup Exec media server & Remote server use the Windows Registry Editor (regedit.exe) to  locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\Server
  2. Create a new DWORD value called MaxRpcDatablockSize
  3. Set the value data to 5242880 (Note: this is a decimal value, default setting is 1048576)
  4. Restart the Backup Exec services.
