Problem

Disaster recovery of Backup Exec Deduplication Disk Storage using Simplified Disaster Recovery is a two step process. This process includes:

1. Preparing for disaster recovery of Deduplication Disk Storage.

2. Performing disaster recovery of Deduplication Disk Storage.

 

Solution

To prepare for a disaster recovery of Deduplication Disk Storage, a pre-disaster snapshot of the Deduplication Disk Storage must be made. The best practices document for Backup Exec states: 

  • Perform regular backups of the deduplication disk storage device to removable media. Create this job separately from the backup job that you use to protect the rest of your system. In the backup selection list, the Backup Exec Deduplication Storage node is located under the User Data node under Shadow Copy Components.

 A snapshot includes the folder and the contents of the folder.

Preparing for disaster recovery of Deduplication Disk Storage  

Use the following steps to prepare for disaster recovery of Deduplication Disk Storage:

  1. From the Backup Exec, on the navigation bar, click Backup and Restore.
  2. On the Backup and Restore tab, right-click the server where the Deduplication Disk Storage Device is located.
  3. Select Backup, and then select Backup to Tape. (Note:  Confirm that the destination location contains enough room for the dedup data to be uncompressed format when running the backup.  If the content is 5 tb with a 2:1 dedup data then you need to have a 10 tb storage location for the data)
  4. In the Selections box, click Edit.
  5. Expand Shadow Copy Components, expand User Data, and then select Backup Exec Deduplication Storage.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Complete any additional options that need to be used.
  8. Click OK to create the job.

Note: Veritas recommends that this job be scheduled to run just prior to the 12:20 AM. and 12:20 PM. Deduplication Maintenance Times.  

Performing a disaster recovery of Deduplication Disk Storage

If a disaster occurs on the Backup Exec Server where a Deduplication Disk Storage is stored, the folder can be recovered after recovering the Backup Exec Server. Simplified Disaster Recovery does not recover the Deduplication Disk Storage during the recovery of the Backup Exec Server. The Deduplication Disk Storage must be recovered using the following procedure. 

Note: If the Deduplication Disk Storage is recovered during the local recovery of the Backup Exec server using SDR, an alert appears with the steps required to recover the Deduplication Disk Storage.  During the restore of Deduplication Disk Storage, the original Deduplication Disk Storage is deleted and replace with the restored folder. 

NOTE: A redirected restore of Deduplication Disk Storage cannot be performed. A Deduplication Disk Storage must be restored to its original location. 

Use the following steps to recovery the Deduplication Disk Storage after recovering the Backup Exec Server: 

  1. From the Backup Exec, on the navigation bar, click Backup and Restore.
  2. On the Backup and Restore tab, right-click the server to restore the Deduplication Disk Storage Device to.
  3. Select Restore and then expand Shadow Copy Components.
  4. Expand User Data and then select Backup Exec Deduplication Disk Storage.
  5. Complete any additional options that need to be used.
  6. Run the restore job. The job runs and completes with exceptions.
  7. After the restore job completes, stop and then restart the Backup Exec Services.
