How to convert EML messages to MSG by using Compliance Accelerator and Discovery Accelerator

Description

Microsoft Outlook could not generate a preview for EML messages after being exporting into a PST format in earlier versions of Compliance Accelerator and Discovery Accelerator. To view such messages, users needed to take the additional step of double-clicking on each message.

Compliance Accelerator and Discovery Accelerator 12.5.1 now support the conversion of EML messages to the MSG format, allowing Microsoft Outlook to natively preview them after an export to PST. Starting with the 12.5.2 release of Compliance Accelerator and Discovery Accelerator, EML to MSG conversion is available for IMAP, SMTP, Instant Messaging, Fax, and Bloomberg message types.

Prerequisite

This document applies to Compliance Accelerator and Discovery Accelerator 12.5.1 and higher.

Solution

Compliance Accelerator and Discovery Accelerator version 12.5.1 now add an export option to convert EML messages to MSG format via a selectable 'EML to MSG' check box. With this option selected, the export will convert EML messages to MSG messages and then add them to one or more PST files, depending on the number and size of the messages. After a successful export run, the contents of the PST file(s) can be previewed in Microsoft Outlook.

CAUTION: The EML to MSG conversion is a time-consuming process. The time taken can be minimized by planning the export runs in batches. During testing of the EML to MSG conversion, export rates of approximately 10,000 messages per hour were seen, based on an average message size of 300KB. This estimate may be conservatively used to plan exports batch runs so they complete within an acceptable time frame.

NOTE: This conversion process only works when the source archive type is SMTP or IMAP. EML messages from other sources, such as Exchange Journal, FSA, and so on, cannot be converted.
