Problem

Restore of System State on Windows Server 2016 or 2019 fails with an error "A failure occurred writing an object". Restore of System State on the earlier Windows versions is successful.

Cause

Windows Defender Antivirus Service has been implemented since Windows Server 2016. The service prevents Backup Exec from restoring the System State.

NOTE: If Symantec Endpoint Protection is installed, please refer to Restore of System State fails with an error "A failure occurred writing an object".

Solution

Please restore the System State after uninstalling Windows Defender. For details, please see the following steps.

  1. Open a Command Prompt on the Windows Server 2016 or 2019.
  2. Run "powershell".
  3. Run "uninstall-windowsfeature -name windows-defender".
  4. Reboot the system.
  5. Restore the system state.
  6. Reboot the system if the restore job completes with no errors.
