How to use Oracle Outside In Technology SDK/Tool To Extract Content From Files

Enterprise Vault (EV) uses Oracle Outside In Technology to convert and extract content from files for indexing to crawl through.  The tool described in this article uses the same technology allowing a person to further test files that have caused issues/warnings in EV.

How to Use:

1. Go to the Oracle Outside In Technology website
2. At the top of the page select Accept License Agreement
3. Scroll down until you find the matching version and download the corresponding HTML Export SDK.
   • Pick the matching OS type and Bit version. 
   • In most cases, customers will likely download the Windows (x86-64).
   • It is best to download the same version of Outside In that EV is using
   • Select the link.
4. The site will now ask you for a Username and Password.
   Note: Insert this information to continue or create a new account.
5. Select a download location
6. Navigate to the download location
   Note: The current example used 8.5.4 as the HTML Export SDK  .  So the downloaded file name was hx-8-5-4-win-x86-64.zip.
7. Right click on the file and select Extract All
8. Choose an extraction location.
   (ex. C:\OracleOutsideIn)
9. Go into the parent folder of the extracted location
   (ex. C:\OracleOutsideIn)
10. Double click on makedemo.bat file.
11. Go into the sdk folder. 
    (ex. C:\OracleOutsideIn\sdk)
12. Go into the demo folder.
    (ex. C:\OracleOutsideIn\sdk\demo)
13. Double click on the application called export.exe
14. Output format = HTML
15. Select the location of the content in the Source document path.
16. Select an empty folder in the Export to path:
    (ex C:\HTMLExport folder)
17. Remove the check from After export, view output file with default application
18. Press the Export button to begin the process
    
19. Go to the location specified in step 16
20. Review the HTML export as well as any other exported files like JPG images.

What Might This Tool Be Used For?

Example 1:  Determining total conversion/extracted size of a file that is throwing 28993 Event Warning Converted content is too large to process.  The example mentioned below does not go over the default size of 10MBs for maximum conversion size but does show how once the file has run through the converter the total size of all parts of the file are larger.  When doing the same for Enterprise Vault Administration Guide.pdf the pdf is about 4MBs but would cause the 28993 warning event because the total converter/extracted size of all parts if 55MBs.

The next image shows converted/extracted content total size is 696KB.

Example 2:  This tool could also used to test a particular file causing the converter in EV to not work properly or crash.  If testing a sample provided by customer that is causing the converter to fail/crash then it is imperative to use the same version EV is using for the customer to see if this tool also fails.  If the tool fails and there is a newer version of the tool the next test would be to use the latest.  If the latest version works and the older does not then check if a newer version of EV has a the newer version of Oracle Outside In Technology.
