For generic device type of filer, the storage license calculates Size from the same underlying Physical namespace when a parent and its sub-folders are shared in Data Insight

Problem

Data Insight computes the same size twice, for the calculation of total monitored storage, on the licensing page, in scenarios where a share’s underlying physical path, and its sub-folders paths, are added, under monitored shares, by Data Insight administrators.

The licensing page displays that the license is exceeded, and the status bar of the console will have a warning message.

Cause

This behavior is observed for generic devices. Currently, Data Insight is not able to distinguish between the physical and the logical paths that are coming from multiple shares. As a result, during the computation of the total storage capacity, Data Insight considers the nested storage as independent storage.

Detailed information about licensing is documented within the Overview of Data Insight licensing section of the  Veritas Data Insight Administrators Guide:

Solution

While adding shares from type "generic device,"  ensure that only the parent physical path (the top-most shared folder) is being monitored by Data Insight.

All sub-folders that are shared under the parent must be scanned only. Otherwise, the licensing calculation will be cumulative for the storage under all the nested shares, duplicating the count from the parent for each subfolder.
