Problem

Some NetBackup Appliances may be susceptible to premature disk failure and may require an updated version of disk firmware and an updated driver for the Software Assist RAID Controllers.

This problem only affects the disks on the head node. The following NetBackup Appliance models and disk firmware versions may be susceptible.

For NetBackup 5230 Appliance:
  1. The disk model is ST1000NM0023.
    • The disk is controlled by and physically connected to the Intel ESRT II RAID 1 controller.
    • The disk firmware version is lower than 0006.
    • The disk firmware version is 0006, and the disk WWN value is less than “0X5000C500855CEAD4”.
  2. The disk model is ST3000NM0023.
    • The disk is controlled by and physically connected to the Intel RMS25CB080 RAID 6 controller.
    • The disk firmware version is lower than 0006.
    • The disk firmware version is 0006, and the disk WWN value is less than “5000C50096ABDF50”.
For NetBackup 5240 Appliance:

  • The disk firmware version is lower than 0006.
For NetBackup 5330 Appliance:
  • The disk model is ST3000NM0023.
  • The disk is controlled by and physically connected to the Intel ESRT II RAID 1 controller.
  • The disk firmware version is lower than 0006.
  • The disk firmware version is 0006, and the disk WWN value is less than “5000C50096ABDF50”.

Solution

To solve the problem, you must install a disk firmware patch that corresponds to your appliance model and software version. You will need to install the disk driver patch as well if your appliance software version is earlier than 2.7.3.

The Disk Firmware Update Readiness Analyzer Tool is available to help you determine if your disk firmware needs to be upgraded. Before you install any of the patches, make sure that you run the Disk Firmware Update Readiness Analyzer tool first.

Available patches can be found in the Veritas Downloads Center.
