Product(s): Enterprise Vault
Problem
RPC error occurs when attempting to Archive or Restore items using the Enterprise Vault Outlook client.
Error Message
Error occurred while processing selected item. RPC server is unavailable
Solution
The Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM) has been disabled on the workstation(s) where users receive this error. Enterprise Vault (EV) enabled users who have the full client installed require DCOM to be enabled.
Solution
To check if DCOM has been disabled follow the steps below:
- Click Start | Run and type: Dcomcnfg Click OK.
- Navigate to: Component Service | Computers | My Computer
- Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
- Select the Default Properties tab.
- To enable DCOM, select: Enable Distributed COM on this computer
- Restart the operating system for the change to take effect.
Workaround
Modify the EV Outlook Add-In behavior to use HTTP instead of DCOM:
- Open the Vault Administration Console.
- Navigate to: Enterprise Vault | Directory on Server_Name | Site_Name | Policies | Exchange | Mailbox
- Double click the Default Policy. If there is more than one policy listed, the Default Policy will have a Yes in the 'Default Policy' column.
- Select the Advanced tab.
- In the List settings from box, select: Outlook
- From the list, find and double click on Outlook Add-In behavior.
- Change the setting from Normal to HTTP-only
- Click OK twice.
- For this change to take effect, perform a manual synchronization on the Enterprise Vault Archiving task.
Note:
The sync can be performed for All mailboxes, or on selected mailboxes. By default, synchronization on All mailboxes occurs automatically every six hours.
