Problem

Minimum O/S ulimit settings on master and media server UNIX platforms.

Solution

Manual: NetBackup 7.x Backup Planning and Performance Tuning Guide

(this document is part of the NetBackup 8.1 documentation)

Modification:

Unix platforms running NetBackup 7.x or 8.x may require additional tuning of the operating system ulimit settings.

file(blocks):
It is recommended to have this set to unlimited.

ulimit -f : maximum file size (in 512-byte blocks)

Example:

root@abcd ~> ulimit -f
256

Command to update it to unlimited:

root@abcd ~> ulimit -f unlimited

root@abcd ~> ulimit -f
unlimited

nofiles(descriptors):
Minimally, the application will require the number of file descriptors to be set to 8000 or greater:

ulimit -n : maximum file descriptor plus 1

Example:

root@abcd ~> ulimit -n
256

Command to update to 8000:

root@abcd ~> ulimit -n 8000

root@abcd ~> ulimit -n
8000

The other ulimit settings should be reviewed and modified as appropriate given the system resources and configuration and do not have recommended minimum settings. Consult your O/S vendor documentation for specifics with configuration for these parameters.

Note: This is for your reference, please go through OS vendor documentation before following up with these commands.
