Problem

How to use the Remote Media Agent for Linux Servers and create a Virtual Tape Library with Backup Exec.

 

Solution
 

PART 1.

 

  1. Login to the Linux server Terminal\Console as "root"

  2. Stop the RALUS agent by running the following command. /etc/init.d/VRTSralus.init stop 

  3.  At the prompt, type cd /opt/VRTSralus/bin to change directory.

  4. Type ./mktls  to run the Veritas Tape Library Simulator Utility. 

  5. Select option  "Create a new simulated tape library" and hit Enter.

  6. On the next screen, provide the path to a folder on the local Linux Server where the Virtual Tape Library files need to be created.

  7. Select the number of slots.

  8. The size of the virtual tapes by default remains 100GB and cannot be altered.

  9. Hit Enter to accept the settings and the virtual tape library is created.

  10. Press "q" to quit or exist MKTLS.

  11. Start the RALUS agent by running the command:  /etc/init.d/VRTSralus.init start

 
PART 2.
 
  1. Open Backup Exec console and go to the Storage tab.

  2. Click the Configure Storage option.

  3. Select Network Storage - > Backup Exec Remote Media Agent for Linux

  4. Enter the IP address or server name of the Linux server. Select the correct logon account for the Linux server and click OK.

  5. Restart the Backup E.xec services when prompted.

  6. The entries for the Virtual Tape Library will be found under the Storage Tab.

  7. Make sure to label the tapes and run an inventory before any job operation is done.
