Problem

DLO Re-directed restores from the Admin Console across WAN links are very slow

Solution

Overview:
In a distributed DLO implementation, it is possible to have users and their NUDF (Network User Data Folder) in a similar geography, but the DLO Server and DLO Administration Console in a different geography connected via WAN link.  User data backs up quickly to their local NUDF.  User directed restores are also quick, however a remote DLO Administrator doing a redirected restore to an alternate computer is very slow.

SOLUTION:
The DLO Administrator can perform a restore in the following two ways, and data flow changes accordingly:

1. Restore to original computer
  • In this case, the DLO Administration Console generates a restore job and sends notification to the DLO Agent
  • The DLO Agent performs the restore operation and hence data flows from the NUDF to the client directly

2. Restore to an alternate computer
  • In this case, the DLO Administration Console generates the restore job and performs the restore operation itself
  • Data will flow from the NUDF to the DLO Server and then to the alternate computer

In option 2 above, if the DLO Administration console is separated from the NUDF and destination computer by a WAN link or other slow connection, this restore job will send data over the WAN link and will therefore run slowly.  To avoid sending data over the WAN or slow link, install another DLO Administration Console in the geography local to the NUDF and destination computer and administer the restore from it.
