Journal Mailbox will not archive when the Exchange Quota has been reached; Event ID 2270

Problem

Journal Mailbox will not archive when the Exchange Quota has been reached. The following two errors below will be logged in the Enterprise Vault logs:

Cause

The Journal Mailbox can have quotas imposed on it. These quotas should not hamper Enterprise Vault (EV) as long as everything runs smoothly. The problem is that for any number of reasons a message or messages can become stuck in the Journal Mailbox and cause a backup of un-archived messages. If the mailbox is backed up enough, it can cause the Journal Mailbox to reach its Exchange Quota. When this happens, the messages will not be able to go into the Journal Mailbox from Exchange but it presents a bigger problem with EV. EV does a lot of it processing through hidden messages and properties that we attach to a mailbox including the Journal Mailbox. We need to be able to update those at time.

If the quota has been reached the hidden message will not be updated and will not be able to process the mailbox. EV also adds data to the metadata of each message this will add to the size of the message and this cannot happen if the quota has been reached. This will generate the above errors in the Event Log on the EV Server.

Solution

1. Within the Exchange Management Console remove, or increase, the quota on the Journal Mailbox and/or the Mailbox Database that the Journal Mailbox resides in.
2. Once the quota is removed, or increased, the Journal Mailbox will begin to be processed by the Journal Archiving Task.
3. Monitor the Journal Mailbox archiving process.
