Problem

Status code: 84 is being returned in NetBackup operations.

Solution

Explanation:

A status code 84 means that a system driver has possibly returned an I/O error while writing to a removable media or disk file.

The status 84 media write errors are usually caused by one or more of the following:
  • Third party monitoring software
  • OS resource issue (kernel parameters)
  • Incorrectly configured SCSI reserve-release
  • HBA hardware, firmware, or device driver issue
  • Tape drive hardware, firmware, or device driver issue
  • Tape drive cleaning required
  • Bridge or switch on the SAN
  • Cable connections between media servers and the robot/drives on the SAN
  • Bad tapes  
  • Incorrect NetBackup tape drive buffer settings

Important information regarding status code 84 can be found in the NetBackup  bptm log and the operating system error logs where the errors occur.
 
The NetBackup bptm logs can be found at the following location:
  • Linux/UNIX:  /usr/openv/netbackup/logs/bptm log
  • Windows:<install_path>\VERITAS\NetBackup\Logs\bptm log
Operating system error logs:
  • Linux/UNIX: syslog 
  • Windows: Event Viewer
Any non-NetBackup related errors that are found should be researched, or the vendors can be contacted for assistance with resolving them.
