Problem
When a user tries to download open a file the Analysis & Review interface, they find that they are only able to save it (using Save or Save As...) and cannot Open the file.
Error Message
The following error is displayed:
The error message will be similar to the following:
C:\filename.xls' could not be found. Check the spelling of the file name, and verify that the file location is correct. If you are trying to open the file from your list of most recently used files on the File menu, make sure that the file has not been renamed, moved, or deleted.
This usually occurs with Excel, but can sometimes occur with other applications.
Cause
This error message occurs when you save or open a file if the path to the file (including the file name) exceeds 218 characters. This limitation includes three characters representing the drive, the characters in folder names, the backslash character between folders, and the characters in the file name.
This behaviour is based on a 256-character limitation in Excel for creating links to another file. This limit of 218 characters for the path name is based on the following:
- Up to 31 characters in a sheet name.
- Apostrophes and brackets used to denote the workbook name.
- An exclamation point.
- A reference to a cell.
Please note that this behaviour will also occur if there is a square bracket [] in the path.
Solution
There is no solution to an item that has been processed with a very long file name or inclusion of a square bracket as you cannot change processed items within Clearwell. Doing so will alter the file from the processed version and will require the new file to be reprocessed and a new item.
You will be able to download the file for review by selecting either “Save” or “Save as…” and then verify that the new path and filename contain fewer than 218 characters.
