Product(s): Backup Exec
Problem
A GRT-enabled backup of a Hyper-V or VMware virtual machine produces an exception.
Error Message
V-79-40960-38531 - During Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) operations, the necessary boot configuration files could not be loaded. Backups that were enabled for GRT may not be available for restore.
Cause
A backup job of a Hyper-V or VMware virtual machine may produce this error for any of the following reasons:
- If a virtual machine is powered off improperly with the "Turn off" option in Hyper-V Manager, the virtual machine's registry database becomes corrupted. As a result, the catalog operation fails and the backup job completes with exceptions.
- The Microsoft Virtual Disk Service APIs are unable to bring the disk online.
- Backup Exec does not support GRT for the type of virtual machine that is being backed up. For example, a non-Windows virtual machine, such as Linux is unsupported for GRT.
- A duplicate backup job may fail with the error when the following conditions are true:
-
- The backup being duplicated is of a virtual machine that has a non-Windows operating system.
- The backup is being run in an environment with a Central Admin Server and a Managed Media Server, and the backup was delegated from the CAS server to an MMS server.
- The option "Enable Instant Recovery for all virtual machines, even those not eligible for GRT" is selected for the backup.
Solution
When a backup job produces this exception, perform the appropriate solution below:
- If the exception occurred because the virtual machine was powered off improperly, do one of the following:
- Power on the virtual machine, and then run the backup job again.
- Power on the virtual machine, shut it down, and then run the backup job again.
- If the exception occurred because the Microsoft Virtual Disk Service APIs were unable to bring the disk online, restart the Backup Exec server.
- If the exception occurred because Backup Exec does not support GRT for the type of virtual machine that was backed up, either ignore the exception or disable the GRT options in the backup job for that virtual machine.
- When a duplicate job produces this error, perform any of the following solutions:
-
- Ignore the exception.
- Run the backup locally on the central admin server.
- Create the job locally on the managed media server.
