Problem

In Backup Exec 2014, the Move Central Administration Server feature is not available. Administrators can however still perform this task using the steps documented in the solution.

Solution

Perform the following steps to move a Central Administration Server (CAS) to a new machine.

1.        Disable communication from each managed Backup Exec server on the CAS. To disable the communication from a managed Backup Exec server, in the Backup Exec server user interface under the Storage tab, right-click the server and click Communication Enabled.

2.        In Backup Exec Utility, use the Dump Database option to dump the database.

3.        Disable the Backup Exec Device and Media Service on the old CAS machine.
4.        Rename the old CAS machine and restart the machine.
5.        Rename the new CAS machine to the old CAS machine’s name.
6.        Install Backup Exec on the new CAS machine with the same options as configured on the old CAS.
7.        Copy the BEDB.bak file from the old CAS machine to the Program Files\Veritas\Backup Exec\Data directory in the new CAS machine.
8.        Copy the xxxx .dek file (Backup Exec Database Encryption Key) from the old CAS machine to the Program Files\Veritas\Backup Exec\Data directory in the new CAS machine.(Backup Exec 15 and later releases).
9.        Copy the files from the Catalogs directory of the old CAS to the Program Files\Veritas\Backup Exec\Catalog directory in the new CAS machine.

Overwrite any existing files with the files from the old CAS machine. Make sure to copy over the Catalog folders for the managed Backup Exec servers as well. These should all be listed under the Catalogs folder.
  • C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\IDR (if present)
  • C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Reports\Saved
  • Backup-to-Disk folders
10.         Copy the BEControl and BEData directories from the old CAS volumes to the new CAS corresponding volumes.
11.      Run Beutility.exe on the new CAS machine.
12.      In Backup Exec Utility, under Database Tasks, select Recover Database, and then select the Drop existing database and reload from backup option.
Make sure the Backup Exec name field has the new CAS machine name displayed.
13.      Select OK to restore the BEDB.bak database.
14.      In the Backup Exec UI, verify status of all devices is shown as online.
15.      Test that all devices are working.
16.      Test that all jobs still run.
17.      Decommission the old CAS machine.
