You may install the NBU client on the individual VM as if it were a physical system, as long as the operating system is currently supported with NetBackup (see compatibility list below).
NetBackup supports backup and recovery of virtual machines in a Citrix XenServer virtualized environment by means of Snapshot method and also Client off-host backup method
A backup policy for VMs in a XenServer environment must have the following parameters configured:
Policy Type: MS-Windows
Perform snapshot backups: checked
Snapshot method: VSS
