How to use NetBackup's drive cleaning utility, tpclean, with a Library that contains a cleaning tape slot.
Description
How to use NetBackup's drive cleaning utility (tpclean) command with a Library that contains a cleaning tape slot.
Note: This command is located in the following location...
UNIX/Linux: /usr/openv/volgmr/bin/
Windows: install_path\Volmgr\bin\
NetBackup's cleaning utility is unable to use a cleaning tape that is in the cleaning slot in a Library. That slot is for the Library's cleaning utility only. If you wish to use NetBackup's cleaning schedule, you must put the cleaning tape/s in tape slots other than the cleaning slot. This will allow the robot to read the barcode or, if the library does not contain a barcode reader, it will allow you to specify which slot contains a cleaning tape. Then it will be possible to add the cleaning tapes and set the frequency for cleaning by performing the following actions:
- Add New Volumes
- In Media and Device Management, select Actions > New > Volumes
- Media Type = <cleaning tape type, 8mm, DLT, etc...>
- Robot = <select the robot in the Library>
- Number of Volumes = <number of cleaning tapes you are adding to the Library>
- Media ID = <media ID of cleaning tape/s>
- NetBackup will automatically add additional volumes in increments of one if you add more than one volume
- Example: If you have three volumes and add Media ID BAK001, BAK002 and BAK003 will automatically be created)
- Specify the max number of cleaning based on manufacturer's recommendation.
- Set the Cleaning Frequency
- Open a command prompt, run the following command:
- Syntax:
tpclean -F <drive_name> <hours>
- Example:

(drive_name =8mm
, hours =50
)
- Syntax:
