Problem

Backup job fails with error "The operation failed to acquire the minimum number of drives and media needed"

Error Message

V-79-57344-3862 / 0xe0000f16 - The operation failed to acquire the minimum number of drives and media needed.

UMI Code: V-275-456 - Cannot use the media in the drive because it is not overwritable.

When a backup job is started or is running, the following message appears in the Job log:
No appendable media could be mounted, Error - Mount Failed

The error given below is displayed in the application event log:
Backup Exec Alert: Job Failed
(Server: "SERVER NAME") (Job: "Test Backup Job") Test Backup Job -- The job failed with the following error: Physical Volume Library Media not found.

Cause

This issue occurs because Append to media, terminate job if no appendable media is available is selected in the Backup Job Properties dialog box and no appendable media(s) is found.

Solution

To resolve this problem do one of the following:
  1. Ensure that there are enough appendable and overwritable media/tapes available.
  2. Inventory Tape Library.
  3. Edit Backup job --> Change the backup job's setting in Storage section from "Append to media, terminate job if no appendable media is available" to either "Append to media, overwrite if no appendable media is available" or to "Overwrite media".
Note: Changing this option might result in one of the existing media being overwritten.

4. If you do not want Backup Exec to overwrite any media(s), make sure an appendable media is available for the backup job.
