How to retire a Robotic tape library and move the media to a new / different Robotic tape library

Solution

Move all the media from the old robot to standalone (non-robotic) pool. If NetBackup still has the tapes in robot X (old), and you try to inventory robot Y (new) with those tapes in it, they will be duplicate media, not "moved" media. Look in the GUI at the old robotic volume group. Select all of the tapes. Move them to standalone (unchecked "volume is in a robotic library" and "---" in volume group name). If the barcodes are being returned differently from the new library than they were from the old, you must change the reporting of barcodes in the new library to match the old. If you had mediaID generation rules for the old library, set them up the same way for the new library.

As NetBackup recognizes the devices through the serial number, you must:
(First, ensure that Removable Storage (RSM) service is stopped and disabled.)

  1. Delete the robot and the drives on NBU config
  2. Delete both from OS config (devmgmt.msc)
  3. Reboot the server and verify the OS recognizes the robot and drive - From The OS Device Manager
  4. Run the Configure Storage Devices Wizard to add the devices to NBU config
  5. Ensure all Media is in new robot.
  6. From the NetBackup GUI, run Inventory the robot - Selecting Update Volume Configuration.

Note: If an entire media server is being decommissioned from the NetBackup environment, please see the according article in the Related Knowledge Base Articles section, below.
