Problem
Insufficient Resources Can Cause Enterprise Vault (EV) Services to Shutdown
Error Message
Insufficient Virtual Memory is available for the Enterprise Vault to run
Enterprise Vault will now be shutdown; to correct this problem, free memory by closing any unwanted applications and restart Enterprise Vault.
Event ID: 4140
Description:
Insufficient Virtual Memory is available for the Enterprise Vault to run Enterprise Vault will now be shutdown.
V-437-4140
Solution
The Enterprise Vault Admin Service continually monitors the following items:
The percentage of usable disk space that is available on the logical disk drive (% Free Space)
Amount of physical memory in MB that is available to be allocated to a process, or for system use (Available Mbytes)
The percentage of the processor's time spent executing non-idle threads (% Processor Time)
If any of these counters continuously log greater than 95% usage, the EV Admin Service will shutdown all EV services, logging Event ID: 4140 in the Enterprise Vault Event Log.
To resolve, this issue:
1) Ensure that the Enterprise Vault server meets the minimum hardware requirements for memory. The minimum recommendation is at least 8 GB for EV 10.0.0 and greater.
2) Check the Page File size on System Properties > Advanced. In Performance, click on Settings > Advanced > Virtual Memory and the Change. Make sure that the Page File size is at least 1.5x the size of the physical memory (2X the physical memory is recommended). i.e., If the EV server has 4gb of physical RAM (4096 MB) the Page File should be either {4096 x 1.5 =} 6144 MB or {4096 X 2 =} 8192 MB. It is also recommended to have the Page File split between multiple drives, with no page file on the C:\ drive if possible. Note that the Page File should be on the C:\ or M:\ in the case of Citrix server installations.
VERITAS recognizes that 64-bit Windows Servers can contain sufficient physical memory to not require a Page File. Careful monitoring of the total memory usage while the system is under heavy loads must be performed in order to determine if sufficient physical memory exists to allow for no Page File. Only if the peak memory used amount is always less than the total physical memory should a Page File be considered as unnecessary.
3) Once the calculated the size has been determined, the Page File should be changed by clicking on Custom Size. The Initial size and Maximum Size should be the same values. Then click on Set. This change requires a reboot of the server.
