Problem
An AIX server experiences a kernel panic when a Veritas File System (VxFS) is forcibly unmounted.Error Message
The following is the panic stack:vx_vnunmap+0000E8

vm_map_delete+000150

Cause
After a VxFS file system is forcibly unmounted, some fields of the VxFS file system in the kernel data structure are set to NULL.Here is the sequence of events:
- A process opens a file within the VxFS file system, before the file system is forcibly unmounted.
- The process uses mmap() to access the file data.
- The process exits after the VxFS file system is forcibly unmounted.
- The kernel tries to "unmap" the file data, causing the system to panic.
Solution
Hot fixes are available that update the application to verify if the VxFS file system is already unmounted before attempting to "unmap" a file. Otherwise, an EIO (Input/Output Error) is returned. The following hot fixes are avaibile to fix the issue:
- fs-aix61-HotFix-6.2.1.102
- fs-aix61-HotFix-6.1.1.104
Contact Veritas Technical Support if the above hot fixes are required.
Fixes will also be available in future official VxFS patches on the AIX platform.
