When restoring Hyper-V virtual machine, all of the virtual disks need to be selected.

Problem

Notes about restoring Hyper-V virtual machines

When restore Hyper-V virtual machines,  all .vhd/.vhdx files that are configuring Hyper-V virtual machine must be selected.
Otherwise Hyper-V virtual machine restore fails with status 2821.


 

Error Message

In case of NOT selecting  all .vhd/.vhdx files on  Restore Marked Files, following messages are logged in Job Details and the restore job fails with status 2821 (Hyper-V policy restore error).

Above " Unrestored common file does not exist " message means that NOT all .vhd/.vhdx files were selected on the list of backup files:

Solution

This is the expected behavior when restoring Hyper-V virtual machines.
In order to restore the virtual machine successfully to the original (same location) or the alternate location , all of the backup files need to be selected.
