To celebrate and recognize Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day (IWD), Veritas is talking with the women behind the scenes of our journey to the Cloud and how they are Embracing Equity, the 2023 IWD theme.

In our third interview, I had an opportunity to connect with Qing Ye, a Senior Engineer on the Veritas Alta product team who is based in our Beijing, China office and has been with Veritas for six years. Qing and her team are working on the delivery of Veritas Alta Backup-as-a-Service.

Q: Qing, let’s start at the beginning. Who has inspired you to pursue a career in technology?

Since I graduated from my university and started my technology career, I’ve met many excellent engineers with brilliant minds. They’ve shared their solid technology foundation and strong working skills, and mentored me to elevate my expertise. They motivate and inspire me to become an expert so I can help new engineers.

Q: It’s amazing you’ve had exposure to so many wonderful mentors. Can you tell us why your role is instrumental in Veritas’ journey to the Cloud?

My team and I are all important to our journey to the cloud, but everyone at Veritas is important. At first, my team and I were new to the cloud project, but as one team, we’ve learned and helped each other succeed. We discuss and upgrade every detail and we complete the features to the highest quality.
I’ve made extra efforts to improve myself and share knowledge with my teammates and other teams with whom we collaborate. I am also troubleshooting issues to ensure our Alta project meets our customer’s business requirements.

Q: This year’s International Women’s Day theme is Embrace Equity; what does equity mean to you?

Veritas has an open culture, so everyone can be themselves and have the same opportunities for professional growth. As an engineer, we’re encouraged to challenge and improve ourselves, receive constructive feedback, and contribute our Company’s success.

Q: I couldn’t agree more, Qing. The Veritas culture is quite equitable. As we honor women’s history and International Women’s Day this month, can you tell us more about the unique barriers you have faced in your career and how you have overcome them?

For me, the biggest barrier I have faced was when I became a mother. The time and energy that pregnancy, childbirth, and parenthood takes can be difficult to balance with your career. Fortunately, at Veritas, achieving a work/life balance to be an engineer and a mom is intentionally facilitated. I can increase my efficiency and focus during appropriate times for multiple roles in my life.

Q: We are all fortunate to have that balance for work and home life. What advice would you give other women who want to grow their careers in technology?

I’d advise female engineers to remember there is no difference between a male and a female engineer. Technology and communication provide an equitable opportunity to all of us. If we collaborate as one team, we can mitigate obstacles successfully and grow as an excellent engineers.

Q: Thank you, Qing, you have such a great mindset. Lastly, what excites you most about the future of Veritas?

Veritas is the leader in our industry and our future is very positive as we continue to innovate. As part of our core Cloud projects, I stand confident and am excited for our future success.
