Problem

Customers migrating from OpsCenter or IT Analytics to Alta View (or those familiar with such products) may wish to set up an alert policy for the NetBackup Catalog Space Low condition. However, when crosslaunching into the Reports & Alerts Management component of Alta View, then attempting to set up this alert policy, it is not listed or available for selection and configuration.

Error Message

There are no error messages associated with this issue. The alert is just not visible in the user interface.

Please note that any references to this alert policy in Alta View documentation, on SORT, through knowledge base queries, or any other source is in error and should not be considered as evidence or binding that this alert policy should exist.

Cause

The NetBackup Catalog Space Low alert policy requires access to the NetBackup primary server's operating system in order to obtain disk space information. This requires that Host Management capabilities are implemented. Commands may then be typically done through tools such as SSH. However, the Alta View platform does not have this capability. For security reasons, Alta View only uses secure websocket connections via REST API calls to NetBackup and associated, integrated data collectors . Therefore, the underlying architecture necessary to support this alert policy does not exist.

Solution

Customers may wish to consider implementing the on premises solution of IT Analytics, as this product is able to integrate Host Management capabilities and therefore query the NetBackup primary server's operating system directly to obtain disk space information. It supports this specific alert policy.
