Problem

Unable to configure or grow a Veritas Data Deduplication (VDD) pool on Veritas Access Appliance 8.1due to insufficient system memory.

Error Message

Error when attempting to configure VDD:

V-493-10-5788 Failed to configure the Veritas Data Deduplication server because of insufficient system memory. 1 TB of Veritas Data Deduplication storage pool requires 0.5 GB of system memory. Install additional system memory as per your requirement.

Error when attempting to grow a VDD pool:

V-493-10-5822 Failed to increase the storage for the Veritas Data Deduplication storage pool because of insufficient system memory. 1 TB of Veritas Data Deduplication storage pool requires 0.5 GB of system memory. Install additional system memory as per your requirement.

Error seen when configuring VDD from the web UI:

Cause

Access Appliance 8.1 requires at least 0.5GB of RAM to be available on each node for every 1TB of VDD storage pool. Operations such as configuring or growing storage for VDD and reconfiguring VDD are not allowed if sufficient RAM is not available on the appliance.

Solution

An EEB is available which removes the memory requirement and allows the following operations even when less RAM is available.

  • The Veritas Data Deduplication without WORM is automatically unconfigured when you upgrade to 8.1 and you are required to reconfigure it post upgrade. This reconfiguration will be allowed.
  • Configure new storage pool for VDD.
  • Grow the VDD storage pool
  • Reconfigure the Veritas Data Deduplication.

After installing the EEB, a warning is printed and a confirmation required for the operations. Example output:

access01> dedupe grow 1058576G
Sufficient system memory is not present to grow the deduplication pool.
1 TB of Veritas Data Deduplication storage pool requires 0.5 GB of system memory on each node.
You may experience a degradation in deduplication performance.
Veritas recommends that you purchase additional memory kit to increase your system memory.
