Sudden increase in backup size of incremental or differential backups

Article: 100044715

Product(s): Backup Exec

Problem

Incremental or differential backups are very large compared to regular backups. This issue will be seen with backups using Modified time method or Archive bit method. The modified time of files/folders being backed up in the job has not changed since full or previous incremental, still they are backed up.

Error Message

NA

Cause

This can happen if permission changes are made on the files/folders being backed up. If permissions are changed at the drive or folder level and is inherited by subfolders/files below then all those folders/subfolders/files will be backed up in next job.

Solution

This behavior is by design. To avoid getting into such situation make sure that permissions are changed before full backup only and not before incremental/differential backups.
