Problem

After changing the Backup Exec media server domain name or moving it to a child domain restore selections may not be visible after a successful catalog job of media.

This issue only occurs if the Backup Exec media server has no reference or existing catalog files for the media being cataloged.

Example Scenario:
  1. The Backup Exec media server performs a local backup (Backup 00001) of itself when the server was called  BEMediaSerer.domain01.local.
  2. The Backup Exec media server was moved to a different domain called domain02.local or BEMediaSerer.domain02.local
  3. Backup Exec was un-installed and reinstalled with no Backup Exec Data or Catalogs saved or the server was rebuilt under the new domain name with the same Netbios name.
  4. A catalog job is then performed on Backup 00001 media which completes successfully.
  5. The Backup/Restore tab only shows the current media server name, BEMediaSerer.domain02.local, and no restore selections for the media that was just cataloged.
  6. The Backup/Restore tab does not list BEMediaSerer.domain01.local as a resource to restore from after the catalog job that contains Backup 00001 when the media server was named BEMediaSerer.domain01.local.
  7. On the Storage tab when viewing the Backup Sets of the media the data to restore is visible.

Cause

NetBios name Resource Container already exists.

Solution

  1. Edit the Windows hosts file on the Backup Exec media server and add an entry for the old Backup Exec media server name - FQDN name. The host entry should resolve to the local server address of 127.0.0.1.
  2. On the Backup/Restore tab add the old Backup Exec media server name.
  3. Restart the Backup Exec services.
  4. On the Backup/Restore tab the restore selections will be visible for the old Backup Exec media server name.
