Problem
STATUS CODE 154: Veritas NetBackup (tm) Status 154: "Storage unit characteristics mismatched to request" error occurs during a backup duplication, when "preserve multiplexing" is enabled.
Error Message
The following error is seen in Activity Monitor for the failed job:
3/15/2010 11:02:29 AM - Error nbjm (pid=3472) NBU status: 154, EMM status: Storage unit is not compatible
Solution
Overview
A Status 154 "Storage unit characteristics mismatched to request" error occurs during a backup duplication, when "preserve multiplexing" is enabled within Veritas NetBackup (tm).
Troubleshooting
This issue can be seen when different storage units are used for the source and destination, but have different multiplex settings. (Note: this can even happen when both storage units refer to the same physical device.)
Master Server Log files

Resolution
There are two separate resolutions:
1. Identify the storage units being used for the duplication. Ensure that the settings for Multiplexing (MPX) are the same between the source and destination Storage Units.

Resolution
There are two separate resolutions:
1. Identify the storage units being used for the duplication. Ensure that the settings for Multiplexing (MPX) are the same between the source and destination Storage Units.
- Within the Administration Console, double-click the "source" storage unit (the storage unit that originally backed up the data) to pull up its properties.
- Note the "maximum streams per drive" configured in the storage unit.
- Pull up the properties for the destination storage unit. Ensure that multiplexing is enabled and is set at the same "maximum streams per drive" or higher as the source storage unit.
2. Do not select the "Preserve Multiplexing" feature for duplications.
