Description

As the needs and requirements for a NetBackup environment change, it may be necessary to migrate the NetBackup catalog information from one Master Server or platform to another or to combine two or more NetBackup domains to form a single domain.

A Master Server can be migrated to new hardware using one of the following procedures linked below as  Related Articles. They require the new Master Server to have the same name as the old Master Server and cannot be used to rename a Master Server.

Media Servers cannot be renamed while they are "live" but they can be decommissioned, renamed and then added back into the NetBackup domain.  More information about the nbdecommission command that can be used to decommission Media Servers is also available in Related Articles

For advanced migrations, not covered or prohibited in the documents above, to ensure data integrity and seamless operation, operations must be performed by a certified VERITAS consultant or Consulting Partner, as they are not supported operations.

VERITAS has developed comprehensive methodologies to handle a variety of reconfiguration requirements including the following scenarios:

  • Migration from an existing master server to a NetBackup appliance master server
  • Merging of two or more domains
  • Splitting of a domain into two or more domains
  • Clustering of a non-clustered Master Server
  • Renaming of a Master Server or Media Server
  • Moving a Master Server to a new machine involving a host name change
  • Moving a Master Server to a different platform/operating system (Windows to Linux/Unix or Linux/Unix to Windows)
  • Un-clustering a clustered Master Server

A number of VERITAS consultants and Consulting Partners worldwide have been trained on these procedures and certified to deliver them in accordance with standards required by the VERITAS technical support organization. VERITAS consultants and Consulting Partners will assist customers by determining the correct approach to take, planning the activity and executing the plan successfully with minimum disruption to the operational environment.
