Problem
Disk configuration errors when restoring to Dell Servers that use the Dell Remote Access Controller (DRAC) adapter.Error Message
Not clearing disk, name=\Device\Harddisk0Disk configuration step failed.
Solution
The Dell Remote Access Controller (DRAC) adapter has the ability to create virtual devices at boot time. One such device is a virtual disk drive. The other is a virtual CDROM drive.
If virtual disk drive creation is enabled, it is presented to the WinPE environment as Hardisk0 for the BMR restore. However, BMR can not access or manipulate this virtual device.
A Master Boot Record (MBR) can not exist on this virtual disk drive. As such, during the disk partition creation process, you will see failures either reading or accessing a disk drive.
Also, the BMR restore log may display messages that the system volume is not Hardisk0. Another possible indication is the presence of a CDROM drive that does not physically exist on the client hardware.
Examples of this in the BMR restore log (
BMR notes the presence of CdRom0 and CdRom1, but the server only has one physical CDROM device. Also, the first boot disk seen by BMR is Harddisk1, but the arcname points to disk(0) and rdisk(0).
Note: The message concerning not clearing the CDROM device(s) is normal and not an error.

Virtual Media ' option of the Dell DRAC card must be Disabled or Detached. This action is performed from the firmware screen during reboot. Look for boot time firmware messages displayed about configuring a remote access controller and use the correct key input (typically a
Ctrl-E ) to enter the configuration menu. Find the 'Virtual Media' option and Detach/Disable it. Save the settings and allow the system to continue to boot normally. Access available Dell documentation for detailed instructions on disabling/detaching the virtual media.
