NetBackup is not supported on hosts with Backup Exec installed

Problem

NetBackup is not supported on Windows hosts which also have Backup Exec installed.

  • Conflicts between these products will produce severe system issues.
  • Backup Exec and NetBackup should not be installed to the same host.
  • These products have not been designed to coexist, and severe system issues occur when they are installed on the same system. 
  • You must uninstall the existing product before installing the other.
  • This applies to RHEL and any OS platforms where Backup Exec is supported.

If Backup Exec is installed the preinstall check will fail with an error "not ok be_nb_same_host: Backup Exec is installed"

Solution

If you have already deployed both products to a single Windows host, use these steps to safely uninstall both and reinstall your product of choice:
  1. Uninstall both products using the Programs and Features (Add/Remove Programs) console in the Windows control panel.
  2. Uninstall any C++ Redistributable packages that were deployed automatically during the Backup Exec installation Process.
  3. In some cases, you may need to manually remove the product folders. 
  • These folders normally reside in C:\Program Files\Symantec and C:\Program Files\Veritas.
  • If you are using other Veritas Products (such as AntiVirus), do not remove it's folder under C:\Program Files\Symantec.  
  • You may also need to manually remove product registry keys at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec and  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veritas
  • You may also need to manually remove the BackupExec agent service using the OS command "sc delete BackupExecAgentAccelerator"
  1. Reinstall the desired product only.
  2. Reboot the machine.
