The restore of an Exchange database VM backup with RCT enabled fails with 0xe000fec1 - A failure occurred performing the post-restore operation

Problem

The restore of an Exchange database from an Application GRT (Granular Restore Technology) enabled virtual agent Hyper-V backup with RCT (Resilient Change Tracking) enabled may fail with an error message even though the restore has completed successfully.

Error Message

V-79-57344-65217 - An error occurred while completing the operation on \\Exchangesvr.company.local\Microsoft Information Store\DB1 A failure occurred performing the post-restore operation.

0xe000fec1 - A failure occurred performing the post-restore operation

Cause

The job log error is cosmetic only, there is no actual error with the Exchange restore.  During restore wrap-up, an activity normally performed for Non-RCT backup restore errors out when it is not applicable with RCT backups.

There are no plans to address this issue by way of a patch or hotfix in earlier versions of the software at the present time.  However, the issue has been addressed in the revision of the product specified at the end of this article.
