How to Use the Veritas Alta SaaS Protection Export Utility (For Admins) to Restore a Mailbox, Folder, or Messages to Exchange

Assuming you have the required authorization and have successfully downloaded, installed the Veritas Alta SaaS Protection Export Utility, follow these steps to perform an Admin export for Exchange.
This KB will cover the following use cases:
- Restore a Mailbox
- Restore a Folder
- Restore Individual Message(s)
- Whenever exporting large amounts of data directly back into a mailbox, first make sure the amount of data being exported does not exceed any mailbox quotas.
Connect the Export Utility
- Provide your work email address (or the email address that was used to share content with you) then click 'Next'. You will be prompted to authenticate with your password.

Configure the Export
- Select 'Admin' as the 'Export Mode'

Choose the Restore Type
To Restore a Mailbox:
- Select where to 'Export From' by clicking the ellipse button.
- Select the mailbox you'd like to restore from your Email Stor and Click 'Ok.'
- To restore a mailbox you'll want to select the mailbox at the mailbox level, and not one of the folders.

- For 'Export What' select 'All Items.'
- For 'Export To' select 'Single Mailbox', and Click the ellipsis button to provide the:
- 'Exchange Connection' - Select your Exchange Connection, for more information see How to Configure the Exchange Connection for the Export Utility.
- 'Mailbox SMTP' - Enter the SMTP address for the destination mailbox. Note: If recovering a deleted mailbox you'll need to create the new mailbox first.
- 'Mailbox Type' - Select 'User Mailbox.'
- 'Folder Path' - Leave blank in this case.
- Optionally you can choose the following:
- Suppress Duplicates
- Only Restore Regular Sent Messages
- Merge 'Active Mailbox' Folder - When enabled, this option simply collapses the “Active Mailbox” location during the restore so that the folders in the active mailbox are merged into the destination mailbox
- Suppress Unsupported Item Classes
- Click 'Ok.'

- Continue to 'Run the Export' below.
To Restore a Folder:
- Select where to 'Export From' by clicking the ellipse button.
- Select the folder in the mailbox you'd like to restore from your Email Stor and Click 'Ok.'

- For 'Export What' select from:
- All Items.
- Specified Items.
- Items Meeting Metadata Filter.
- For 'Export To' select 'Single Mailbox', and Click the ellipsis button to provide the:
- 'Exchange Connection' - Select your Exchange Connection, for more information see How to Configure the Exchange Connection for the Export Utility.
- 'Mailbox SMTP' - Enter the SMTP address for the destination mailbox. Note: If recovering a deleted mailbox you'll need to create the new mailbox first.
- 'Mailbox Type' - Select 'User Mailbox.'
- 'Folder Path' - Click the ellipse button and browse to the folder you'd like to restore to. If necessary you can right click and choose 'Create Folder' to create a new folder in the destination.
- Optionally you can choose to 'Suppress Duplicates' and 'Only Restore Regular Sent Messages.'
- Click 'Ok.'

- Continue to 'Run the Export' below.
To Restore Individual Message(s):
- Select where to 'Export From' by clicking the ellipse button.
- Browse to the folder in the mailbox you'd like to restore messages from (i.e Inbox) and click OK.
- For 'Export What' select from:
- Specified Items - Click the ellipse button and the item list will populate. You can select individual items or multiple items using the Ctrl or Shift selection methods.
- Items Meeting Metadata Filter - Add a metadata filter instead of selecting 'Specified Items.'
- Specified Items - Click the ellipse button and the item list will populate. You can select individual items or multiple items using the Ctrl or Shift selection methods.
- For 'Export To' select 'Single Mailbox', and Click the ellipsis button to provide the:
- 'Exchange Connection' - Select your Exchange Connection, for more information see How to Configure the Exchange Connection for the Export Utility.
- 'Mailbox SMTP' - Enter the SMTP address for the destination mailbox. Note: If recovering a deleted mailbox you'll need to create the new mailbox first.
- 'Mailbox Type' - Select 'User Mailbox.'
- 'Folder Path' - Click the ellipse button and browse to the folder you'd like to restore to. If necessary you can right click and choose 'Create Folder' to create a new folder in the destination.
- Optionally you can choose to 'Suppress Duplicates' and 'Only Restore Regular Sent Messages.'
- Click 'Ok.
Before running the export, it is important to note the following. There could be data in Veritas Alta SaaS Protection that no longer resides in the mailbox. This includes folders and messages. Exporting this data will result in these folders/messages being put back into the mailbox. If this is not desired, select the '
Advanced settings' and enable the option '
Suppress 'Removed From Source' Content'.

Run the Export
- Select the 'Restore Type' as 'Original Item.'
- Select the 'Admin Export Mode':
- All - Exports/recovers the latest version for all items.
- All (Point-In-Time) - Provide a date and time. Exports/recovers the most recent item versions prior to the selected point-in-time.
Note: Point-in-time recovery is handy for recovering from ransomware attacks. - Specific Range - Provide either a Range Start or Range End or both. Exports/recovers only those items for which there exists a version between the selected start and end dates. The item version dates are based on when it was added to Veritas Alta SaaS Protection. Only item versions with dates between the range start and end are included in the scope (their latest version from within range start and end will be restored).
- As the export runs, you will be able to see its progress.
- When the export completes, you can go back and run another export by clicking the 'Run Another Export' button.
Access the Export
- Navigate to the output location you configured for your export and you should see the restored items.
