Problem

Windows server temporarily freezes every two hours observed on certain hardware configurations when Backup Exec server or Remote Agent is installed.

Task Manager reports only 30% - 40% CPU usage, but the mouse does not move smoothly when this issue occurs.

This issue observed under the following conditions

  •  Windows 2012 R2, but not limited to
  •  UEFI BIOS Enabled. UEFI firmware features.
  •  Windows OS installed using UEFI GPT partition style.
  • Lenovo Think System

Cause

The server freeze can occur outside of the Backup Exec application being installed or running on the server.

WMI calls/queries to the BCD calls outside of Backup Exec temporarily causes the server freeze.

Solution

The issue appears to be related to a certain hardware configuration and can be reproduced outside of Backup Exec.

A possible solution is to apply the latest Server BIOS/UEFI firmware update.
