Problem
GRT backup jobs of Vmware VMs using the AVVI option targeted to the deduplication folder hang intermittently.
Error Message
In the Application Event Viewer Event with ID 50000 from PDVFS service isregistered with description: Error occurred in PDVFS driver: VMDKFilter: The offset in this write request isless than offset already written.Stream Handler does not support such writes.Disable stream handler and retryOthers error messages with from PDVFS service with Event ID 50000 are generatedas well:An error occurred in the PDVFS driver: CDiskManager::MapConnection: caughtexception; error: 21
Solution
Workaround:
Disable the VMWare stream handler in this registry key;
- "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veritas\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\Engine\VMware Agent\Disable NTFS File Extent Mapping"
- Set value to 1 to disable
Or turn off GRT for the AVVI backup jobs.
With the Vmware stream handler disabled the deduplication ratio will be lower so the deduplication storage use needs to be monitored regularly.

There are currently no plans to address this issue by way of a patch or hotfix in the current or previous versions of the software at the present time. This issue may be resolved in a future major revision of the software at a later time. However, this particular issue is not currently scheduled for any release.
