Problem

The backup is successful. However, in Backup Archive and Restore, the individual pieces of System State (like SYSVOL) are grayed out.

Cause

When recovering an Operating System, in an effort to reduce complications due to improper restore procedures, it is important to restore the entire Shadow Copy Components and or System State of the OS. Restoring individual pieces of the System State frequently results in an OS which can not be successfully rebooted. Therefore, starting in NetBackup 6.5.4, it is no longer possible to granularly select the individual sub components of System State for restore.

Prior to 6.5.4, when selecting individual sub components of System State to restore, the restore job would frequently fail with errors.

Solution

It is possible to recover the individual pieces of System State for granular use if you perform a redirected restore.

Example:

The 'SYSVOL' component (if it exists) is associated with Active Directory. It is common to need to restore content from the SYSVOL folder. But in 6.5.4 and newer it is impossible to restore exclusively the SYSVOL sub component of System State.

The only way to obtain the SYSVOL content is to restore all of System State.

System State in selections

When doing this, it is best to stage a 'disposable' volume exclusively to redirect the System State restore to. Once the restore has completed to this alternate location, you can then access the SYSVOL content as needed.

Due to the read-only state of many of the OS related files which are restored by System State, it will be difficult to delete much of the content which was restored. That is why it is important to direct the restore of System State to a 'disposable' volume. Once you have obtained the information you need, you can simply reformat the volume to eliminate the unwanted contents.

  1. Create the folder on the disposable volume where you want the restore to go to.
  2. Start Backup Archive and Restore and select the appropriate Source and Destination client machines.
  3. Place a check next to System State, then select Actions > Restore
  4. Select Restore everything to a different location (maintaining existing structure)
  5. In the Destination field, type in the drive letter and folder name which have been staged to receive the restore.
  6. Select Overwrite existing files
  7. Select Start Restore

Restore Marked Files

  1. SYSVOL contents are restored as part of the entire System State restore job.
